IN LANGKAWI

Langkawi Island is known for its legendary and a magical stories which is also known as the Jewels of Kedah.

Langkawi comes from words 'Lang' (the brown eagles) and 'Kawi' (the local manganese stones). As you can see, the main symbol of Langkawi is the brown eagles. When visitors land by the ferry, they are greeted by the eagles clutching to the manganese stones monument. Your visit to Langkawi will not be meaningful if you do not visit the Eagle Square which is situated near the Jetty Point.

 

Langkawi's main attractions are the virgin sandy beaches where the beaches have gently continental slope and clear water. With the collection of thickly forested tropical isles, mountains and beaches, it is the first UNESCO endorsed Geopark in South East Asia. As you drive along, the swaying coconut & palm trees, the lush greenery of the rain forests, the fresh breeze from the ocean and wonderful view of the coastline will often be your company.

1. Cable Car Langkawi

The Langkawi Cable Car, also known as Langkawi SkyCab, is one of the major attractions in Langkawi Island, Kedah, Malaysia. It provides an aerial link from the Oriental Village at Teluk Burau to the peak of Gunung Machinchang, which is also the location of the Langkawi Sky Bridge. The total length is 2.2 km, with a journey time from the base to the top of around 15 minutes. 

 

Hovering over jungle and climbing over 550 million years old rock, SkyCab gives you more than one unique experience. Be informed, SkyCab is located at the oldest part of South East Asia and the first to emerge from the ancient sea and estuary! That’s something to give a goose bump if you can get the gist.

2. Cenang Beach Langkawi

Cenang is the busiest beach town on Langkawi Island, where you can find a diverse mix of cafes and restaurants, as well as souvenir shops, and duty-free outlets along its picturesque beach strip. Just a 10-minute drive from Langkawi International Airport, it’s a popular holiday destination for travelling families thanks to its kid-friendly attractions such as Underwater World Langkawi and Rice Garden Museum. Featuring white sands and clear waters, Pantai Cenang’s expansive beach is also great for sunbathing and exciting water sports such as jet skiing and parasailing.

 

High-end resorts, chalets and budget hotels with views of the Andaman Sea are aplenty here, attracting throngs of locals, expats, backpackers, and foreign tourists. Pantai Cenang’s nightlife scene is the liveliest on Langkawi Island, with plenty of beachfront bars and lounges offering inexpensive alcohol and snacks, as well as live music and cultural performances until late.

3. Underwater World Langkawi

Spread across nearly six acres, Underwater World Langkawi is one of the island’s best-known attractions. Located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang (almost at the border of Pantai Tengah), beside the Zon duty-free shopping centre, it is Malaysia’s largest aquarium. The huge white-washed structure houses more than 200 different species of marine and freshwater fish including harbour seals, rockhopper penguins, sharks, giant rays and the enormous Amazonian arapaima – the biggest freshwater fish in the world.

4. Bird Paradise & Wildlife Park Langkawi

Langkawi Wildlife Park & Bird Paradise is located at Jalan Ayer Hangat and about ten minutes from Kuah, Langkawi. This complex is a tropical garden with over 2,500 exotic birds from 150 species such as canaries, owls, eagles, toucans, hornbills and flamingos. Approximately 1,500 birds in this place are freely fly around the complex. The Langkawi Bird Paradise is the first fully covered wildlife park in Asia. Within the complex are a cool souvenir store and a gallery houses a display of rare crafted and raw crystal ornaments from Brazil and China.

5. Pregnant Maiden Island 

Pregnant Maiden Island is the second largest island in Langkawi. It’s located offshore and south of the main island which easily can be reached by a boat. It has a wonderful large fresh water lake surrounded by hills having dense rain forest. The amazing facts about the lake is, although it lies very close to the sea and separated by only a thing strip of rocks, it is a fresh water lake with deep blue waters. The lake and the surrounding area is part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park.

 

This is one of the three geopark of Langkawi with great limestone formations, marbles and unique geological features. Other wonderful things to be found there are several underwater caves surrounding the island.

6. Payar Island Marine Park

The sprinkling of jade green islands that make up Pulau Payar lie just 30km south-east of Langkawi Island. It takes about one hour boat ride from Kuah Jetty Point, Langkawi Island. Payar Island is the best marine park on Malaysia’s West Coast, making it an ideal and amazing choice for a day outing during your holiday in Langkawi Island. The most interesting and popular activity at Payar Island is snorkelling and diving exploring undersea marine life action. Other best features of Payar Island Marine park is its Coral Garden, a secluded section of the park with colourful and wonderful coral beautifully protected and preserved due to its sheltered waters.

7. Kilim Geoforest Park

Kilim Geoforest Park also known as the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is 100 square kilometres which are some of the amazing places must be visited in Langkawi Island. It is a nature reserve and a collection of geo-sites full of amazing flora and fauna, and stunning geological formations like mammoth limestone, fossils, caves, lagoons, beaches and seascapes. It is part of the larger Langkawi Geopark and one of the biggest hot spots of Eco tourism in the entire region. The approach to the Kilim Geopark is through the Kilim River. Visitors need to take a tour on a motor boat that starts from the Kilim Jetty or the Tanjung Rhu bay. During the journey along the Kilim River there are a lot of wildlife species such as squirrels, birds, mud crabs, monkeys, monitor lizards and crocodiles.

8. Eagle Square

Located in Kuah Town and next to the ferry jetty point, Eagle Square is the place that represents origin of Langkawi Island’s name. The square is marked by a massive 12 meter tall sculpture of a reddish brown eagle. Langkawi’s name has been derived from reddish brown eagle, because in old Malay language “Helang” means Eagle, and “Kawi” stand for reddish brown. The square covers a landscaped area that has covered terrace, beautiful small ponds, fountains, footbridges, shops & eateries, and covered pavilions where events are held there sometimes. However, the most attractive things at this square are the view of the bay that opens out to the sea with the backdrop of mountains.

9. Seven Wells Waterfall

Seven Wells Waterfall is so named because seven natural pools have been formed at different levels by water streams that flow down the second highest mountain of Langkawi - Mount Mat Cincang. This is the most picturesque and undoubtedly the best waterfall in the island, has one of the legends of Langkawi associated with it also. It is said that the wells, or pools at the very top of the falls are where Fairies come to bathe.

 

The total vertical fall is 91 meters and the lowest pool is formed at the bottom. Seven Wells Waterfall is located close to the Oriental Village where the Cable Car ride takes place.

10. Mardi Agro Technology Park

The Agro Technology Park was developed in 1990. It functions as a centre for technology transfer and information dissemination concerning agro-industry. The park is also designed as an eco-tourism spot for visitors to Langkawi. It is located at the neighbourhood of Lubuk Semilang Recreational Park with panoramic view of forested Gunung Raya catchment area.
